Diploma Requirements The Brooks academic year consists of two semesters divided by a three-week winter term in January.  Eighty credits are required for a diploma. Number grades are posted at the midterm and end of every semester for all major courses. Minor courses  are graded pass/fail at the midterm and with a number grade at semester’s end. Certain performance-based  courses in the arts are graded pass/fail. Sixth formers may petition the academic office to have one elective  course below the AP level graded pass/fail (see below). Exchange：While the exchanges provide participants with the opportunity to travel, the primary goal is to allow students to immerse themselves in schools that are quite different from their own. Exchange students face a series of demanding expectations: Even as they keep up with assignments from Brooks, they must take a demanding load of classes at their host school. They are ambassadors for their schools and their countries. Given differences in curricula, language barriers, and the fact that partner schools do not place the emphasis on competitive sports that Brooks does, students are asked to adapt to a new environment. Brooks students apply each year to a range of colleges and universities, nationwide and internationally.  Roughly 41 percent of the class of 2014 will matriculate somewhere in New England. Fourteen percent will  head West for college, seven percent to the Mid-West, 10 percent to the South, and 24 percent to the  Mid-Atlantic.
