Not only is Thornton Academy one of the nation’s oldest independent schools, it is also is one of the oldest public-private partnerships in the country. In 1889 it opened its services to local communities, who contracted with Thornton’s Board of Trustees for the education of their communities’ children. Thus, for the last 120 years, Thornton Academy’s history interweaves the education of students whose parents chose Thornton Academy with the education of students whose town government chose the school. Poised for its Bicentennial in 2011, Thornton Academy remains a unique school, cherishing its independent status as well as its responsibility to educate a broad constituency.
