The grading system, A–F, also includes a pass/fail option in one course for seniors taking five courses. Loomis Chaffee does not rank its students. At Loomis Chaffee we encourage our students to understand their roles as citizens in a small community and a large diverse democracy and to foster an active, engaged approach to citizenship in our global society. The Norton Family Center for the Common Good, established in 2012, nurtures in our students the skills and desire to be knowledgeable about the democratic principles of freedom and justice; informed about local, regional, and national public affairs; capable of engaging in civil discourse and other forms of political engagement; and understanding of the different cultures and governments of the world. All freshmen enroll in a yearlong Common Good Seminar designed to explore and expand the ideas of “the best self and the common good” in ways that will inform their emerging thoughts and actions regarding “community” at Loomis and beyond. Conversations about the common good expand to the wider school community through speakers series, all-school readings, the curriculum, and interdisciplinary programs.
