The school year has two semesters, during which over 200 courses are offered, each worth 1 unit. Thirty-six academic units are required for graduation. In grades 9 and 10, the minimum course load is five major subjects; in grades 11 and 12, four major subjects. Taft's academic grading system includes a 40 to 100 achievement scale and a letter grade-based assessment of students' academic habits. The honor roll is comprised of students who earn an academic average of 87 or above for a semester. The high honor roll is comprised of students who earn an average of 93 or above for a semester. Independent Studies Program: The goal of the Independent Studies Program is to advance student independence and creativity.
